South Dakota lawmakers are killing a bill prohibiting health care providers from reporting debt to credit agencies.

The bill’s supporters say medical debt is not taken on by choice, so it shouldn’t be treated like other debt.

Opponents say limiting information to consumer credit agencies could cause problems for the financial system.

The bill failed on the House floor in a 24 to 44 vote Thursday.
