The South Dakota house is rejecting bill requiring school staff disclose to parents if their child expresses “gender confusion” or “dysphoria.”
The bill also prohibited school staff from encouraging to withhold information about the student from their parents or provide instruction about exploring gender identity.
Supporters said the bill strengthened parental rights.
Opponents argue it would damage students’ trust in school counselors. They also say it can compromise student safety in situations where they have an unstable home life.
The House defeated the bill in a 40 to 28 vote Thursday.
The Legislature is in the midst of a four-day weekend. Session resumes Tuesday.
