House rejects bill changing residency rules at state universities

SDPB

South Dakota lawmakers are voting down a measure loosening housing requirements at state universities.

Existing state law requires students to live on campus for two years, though students can request exceptions.

A bill brought by Rapid City Republican Rep. Phil Jensen would have let students live off-campus after their first year. Jensen argued students should have the right to choose where they live.

Opponents worried about costs, noting the university system could lose out on millions in revenue from student housing, SDBA reports. Others argued students perform better when living on campus.

The bill failed on the House floor in a 42 to 28 vote.
