Legislature passes bill requiring schools to accept cash at events

SDPB

A bill requiring public schools to accept cash at games and other events is heading to the governor’s desk.

The bill comes after some districts – including Sioux Falls public schools – began prohibiting cash at certain events.

Supporters say the bill makes it easier for parents and others to attend school events, noting some people don’t have debit or credit cards.

Opponents argue it took away from local school district’s control.

It passed the House by a single vote and now just needs Gov. Larry Rhoden’s signature to become law.

Other similar versions of the bill previously failed this session. SB 219 took a more narrow approach and excluded public universities and technical colleges.
