The House State Affairs Committee is advancing a bill that proponents say protects the state’s ballot measure process.
SB 106 requires individuals wanting to sponsor a petition for a ballot measure to be registered as a South Dakota voter to be eligible.
The bill comes after a Florida resident filed a mandated prayer petition for the 2026 ballot, saying the low signature requirement in South Dakota was a primary reason why.
The bill passes committee and now heads to the House floor.
