House Ag, Natural Resources committee rejects water savings account bill

SDPB

A House committee rejects a bill that would establish a savings account for future water projects.

Opponents of SB 202 say the last thing the state needs is another savings account on top of already existing accounts.

Rapid City Sen. Helene Duhamel is the bill’s primary sponsor. She said as the state’s population grows – the need for water project funding too will grow.

“It’s never too early to start saving money for the future. When we have water systems going in both directions, the need for water is so great," Duhamel said. "I think it’s short-sighted to cut off an opportunity to have a savings account. So, hopefully, I can finally get people that want to work on this together and make it happen for South Dakota’s future."

She said she plans to bring a similar bill next session.

The House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee kills the bill 10 to 3.
