A visionary known for his restless aesthetic, Miles Davis is widely regarded as one of the most innovative, influential, and respected figures in music. With full access to the Miles Davis Estate, American Masters: Miles Davis—Birth of the Cool, premieres Tuesday, Feb 25, 8pm (7 MT), on SDPB1.

The film features never-before-seen footage, including studio outtakes from Davis’s recording sessions, rare photos and new interviews. Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter, Davis’s son Erin Davis and nephew Vince Wilburn, bassist and Davis collaborator Marcus Miller, and Ron Carter are just a few of the luminaries weighing in on the life and career of the cultural icon.
From award-winning filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, Jonestown: The Life and Death of the People’s Temple) the film takes an unprecedented deep dive into the world of a beloved musical giant, and earned a Grammy nomination for “Best Music Film.”
To celebrate the premiere, the JAS Quintet will play the music of Miles Davis on Jazz Nightly with Karl Gehrke, Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8pm (7 MT), at SDPB’s Sioux Falls Studios. The event is free and open to the public.
JAS Quintet features the classic jazz quintet instrumentation of trumpet (Jim Spiers), saxophone (Joel Shotwell), piano (Jeffrey Paul), bass (Andrew Reinhartz), and drums (Daniel Heier).
“The JAS Quintet first explored the music of Miles Davis from his early days in bop to his first electric records for their Jazz Curators show in 2015,” says Jazz Nightly host Karl Gehrke. “We’re excited they’ll share some of Davis’ compelling music live in our Sioux Falls studio for a live Jazz Nightly performance.”
