Governor Kristi Noem’s push to ban abortions after six weeks of pregnancy had the support of prominent national anti-abortion groups. But the proposal lacked support from a key organization that has held sway over state abortion policy for years. And that helps explain the bill’s failure. SDPB’s Lee Strubinger has this report.

Some of South Dakota’s first permanent white settlements were established along the Missouri River after the Yankton Sioux ceded the land to the U.S. Government in 1858. On today’s “Images of the Past,” we’ll have a look at the early history of Bon Homme county, which today includes the towns Tyndall, Tabor, Scotland and Springfield. Robert Foley, Secretary/Treasurer of the Bon Homme Heritage Association, which operates the Memorial Church Museum in Tyndall joins us now by phone.

He is an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and was named a 2022 United States Artist Fellow, which comes with a $50,000 award of unrestricted funds. He is currently a 2024 MFA candidate at the Bard College and teaches at the Oglala Lakota College.
