While the southern part of the state is bracing for a potentially dangerous snowstorm Thursday and Friday, the state wrestling meet will remain on schedule. The State High School Wrestling Tournament takes place this weekend at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. John Krogstrand with the South Dakota High School Activities Association said qualifying high schools have been made aware of the situation. Krogstrand said the Association has faced this decision in the past few years.

"I think it was about three years ago—we were headed up for a split-tournament situation. One in Watertown, one in Aberdeen, with a similar system coming in, and basically the advance notice is: we’re gonna try to continue, unless something really catastrophic happens, we’re gonna try to continue as scheduled, knowing that the vast majority of our teams are gonna travel at least a day early from when competition would begin," explained Krogstrand. "And then also kinda give that heads-up so that the schools that are local—like Tea, or Canton or Beresford that maybe are previously planning on driving in each day to make some different accommodations and maybe stay in town."

Krogstrand said once the teams get to Sioux Falls, there’s no point sending them back out in the severe weather. Forecasters say the southern part of the state, including the state tournament’s host city, could receive up to a foot of snow by late Friday.
