On Friday, the Sioux Falls Canaries will honor former player Pat Mahomes by inducting him into their team Hall of Fame, and by retiring his number. Mahomes, now 48-years old, is the father of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and the 2018 National Football League Most Valuable Player Patrick Mahomes II.
Mahomes played professional baseball from 1988-2009. For South Dakotans, he’s most well known for his time spent with the Minnesota Twins (1992-1996) and Sioux Falls Canaries (2007-2009).
Throughout his time playing in the Sioux Empire, Mahomes won a total of 24 games, which included a big-time performance in the final game of the 2008 American Association championship series. Mahomes played a key role in lifting Sioux Falls to their lone title since the revival of independent baseball in the early 90’s.
In an interview with KWSN Sports in Sioux Falls this week, Mahomes said he’s excited for Friday night at The Birdcage.
“I had some great years in South Dakota, and the fans were always great. It’s going to be good to get back and see some of my old guys,” explained Mahomes. “My pitching coach [Mike Meyer] is the manager there now, and one of my teammates [Ben Moore] is now the pitching coach, so it’s going to be fun to get back and see the fans and reminisce.”
The first 1,000 fans to enter Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night will receive a Pat Mahomes – Sioux Falls Canaries poster. While Mahomes will be in attendance, it’s unclear if his son Patrick Mahomes II, the NFL’s MVP, will be there or not.
