Colman-Egan Defeats Herreid/Selby Area For 9B Title

The Colman-Egan Hawks won their second 9B state championship in three years on Thursday night in Brookings with a 58-6 performance over Herreid/Selby Area. For the Hawks, they finished the 2019 season with an undefeated 13-0 record.

Colman-Egan got the ball to start the game, and they’d hold it for nearly half of the opening quarter. Nate Tolley would finish the drive with a one-yard touchdown run to put the Hawks ahead 8-0.

Herreid/Selby Area coughed up the pigskin on their first possession, which was recovered by Colman-Egan. Ryan Voelker then cut loose down the sideline for a 33-yard touchdown run to put the Hawks up 16-0 with 5:45 to play in the opening quarter.

At the 10:44 mark of the second quarter, Wade Begeman found Trey Sayler to put Herreid/Selby Area on the board. It was an 80-yard drive that took up 16 plays. The two-point attempt failed, and Colman-Egan led 16-6.

Colman-Egan would go 60-yards on their next drive, which found the end zone on 14-yard touchdown run by Ryan Voelker. The Hawks increased their lead 24-6 with 9:23 to play in the half.

Voelker would score again for Colman-Egan on their next drive, this time on a 31-yard run. It made a 32-6 game at the 8:25 mark.

The Hawks would score one more time before halftime. A 7-yard touchdown run by Tolley made it 38-6 in favor of Colman-Egan going into the locker rooms at the break.

Tolley would find the endzone again with 3:13 to play in the third quarter, this time from one-yard out – this made it 44-6 in favor of Colman-Egan.

The Hawks put up another score, courtesy of a 10-yard Tolley run with 8:59 to play in the game.

With a running clock, Colman-Egan would do it again. This time it was Dawson Tolley who scampered through the defense for a 20-yard touchdown. This score made it 58-6 with 3:33 remaining in the game.
