Eric Kline’s career high school scoring mark, and record in ‘AA’ hoops has been surpassed. On Friday night, Yankton Bucks star and Wisconsin Badgers commit Matthew Mors jumped ahead of Kline on the all-time list. Eric Kline set the ‘AA’ career scoring record of 2,025 points with Aberdeen Central in 1988-91.
Mors entered the game needing ten-points to break the mark and that’s exactly what he had. Watertown ended up taking down No. 1 ranked Yankton 54-53 in the contest, but Mors passed Kline's total.
Matthew Mors isn’t just the best basketball player in the state right now, he’s one of the best ever to to play high school hoops in the Mt. Rushmore State. Mors currently has 2,026 points. When looking at Krogman's total of 3,521, that leaves a difference of 1,495 points between the two athletes.
Yankton has a maximum of eight games remaining this season – four regular season contests, the SoDak 16 playoff round, and then three games at the state tournament. If they have the same amount of games next season, then that’s 33 games remaining in Mors’ high school career.
Based on the point gap between Mors and Krogman, and the games remaining for Mors, Mors would have to average 45.3 points per game to catch Krogman’s all-time record – yeah, it’s not happening.
But hey, it still means a lot to capture the ‘AA’ scoring record. After all, a 2,000-point career in AA is much rarer than in Class B.
Regardless of records, let’s just all appreciate that we’re currently witnessing one of the best ever in South Dakota hoops history in Matthew Mors. Who knows when another player will come around who can match the skillset of the Yankton Bucks star.
