The South Dakota high school boys state basketball championships will take place this week in Aberdeen (B), Sioux Falls (A), and Rapid City (AA).
This year, three boys’ basketball seniors are members of the 2,000-point club. Matthew Mors of Yankton, Paul Bruns of Dakota Valley, and Connor Libis of Dell Rapids St. Mary. All three of these athletes will compete on the state’s biggest stage this week, although, each will compete at a separate tournament, because they’re all in a different class – Mors in AA, Bruns in A, and Libis in B.
For two of these three stand out players, Mors and Libis, it’s the final three games towards history. Coming into the state basketball championships, Connor Libis is the No. 3 boys basketball scorer in South Dakota high school history with 2,660 career points. Matthew Mors has just seven less points with 2,653, and he comes in at No. 4 on the same list. Paul Bruns currently has 2,075 career points, which means he’ll likely finish his career in the range of No. 19 – No. 23 on the all-time list.
So, who will finish their career with more points, Mors or Libis? No matter what, unless one of them goes off to average around 60-points per game at the state tournament, these two will finish at No. 3 and No. 4 on the all-time scoring list in South Dakota, but it’s the order of who will finish third and who will finish fourth that is not yet known.
