A South Dakota hockey team is qualified for a national championship tournament.
The team has 20 players who are all 14 years old or younger.
They will travel to Michigan on Wednesday to compete against teams from around the country. Their first game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Central time Thursday against the Alaska Oilers.
Carter Sanderson, of Pierre, is one of the players.
“Last year, we came out of a tough loss against Alaska in the quarterfinals, who ended up winning the national championship,” Sanderson said. “This year, we’re going to come back stronger with good forward lines, a couple great [defensemen] and really good goal tending, just looking to win a national championship this year.”
The team will play in a three-round pool and the top teams will advance to championship rounds.
All games will be livestreamed.
