Augustana University is launching an esports program for competitive gaming, the Sioux Falls school announced Thursday.

The program was established in Fall 2022, It will serve as a “home” for teams dedicated to different game titles, according to a press release.

The inaugural team is focused on League of Legends, a game where groups of five players try to destroy their opponent’s base in a battle arena. Ten students plan to compete in a seven-week competitive circuit starting in late January.

The university hopes to expand to more teams and gain entry to the Midwest Esports Conference. It's also hosting an esports summer camp for high school students this June.

Augustana's program joins several others in the state, including those at Dakota State University, SD Mines and the University of South Dakota.

Slater Dixon is a junior at Augustana University studying Government and Data Science. He was born in Sioux Falls and is based out of SDPB's Sioux Falls studio.
