The Sioux Falls Washington Warriors remembered their teammate while competing at the SDHSAA state cheer and dance competition. The group lost fellow teammate Sophie O’Connor, both a dancer and cheerleader, at the start of their season in June.
The cheer and dance teams, looking to honor O’Connor throughout the season, wore special bows with sunset patches at every competition. Sunsets, according to head cheer coach Bailey Franzen, were “Sophie’s thing.”
O’Connor, as described by head dance coach Angela Neiman, “was little, but was a huge personality.” Neiman knew O’Connor, because as a kid, she danced at her studio.
As a 2023 graduate of Washington high school, O'Connor was a two-time state champion for the Warriors cheer and dance squad.
Neiman told stories of how O’Connor made those who were new and old to the team feel welcomed and supported.
“She always wanted everyone to be ready and focused, but did it in such a kind way,” Neiman said.
The dance team competed in hip-hop and pom this year, but decided to incorporate a jazz routine dedicated to O’Connor.
“It’s been the hardest season,” stated Neiman. “But these girls have carried me, we’ve carried each other, and we feel Sophie with us every step of the way.”
Washington placed 1st in the Hip Hop category and 2nd in Pom. They also placed second overall in dance. The Warriors took home 8th place in overall cheer.
