2024 SDHSAA State Volleyball, Friday Recap

Day two of the 2024 SDHSAA state volleyball tournaments consisted of the semifinal and consolation semifinal rounds. Here are the results from Friday and schedule for Saturday.

Class AA

Consolation Semifinals

No. 5 Watertown defeated No. 8 Aberdeen Central – 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-17)

Emery Thury led Watertown with 22 kills in the contest. Grace Corey tallied 41 assists and Natalie Pearson recorded 31 digs for the Arrows as well in the win. For Aberdeen Central, Lauryn Burckhard had 11 kills in the match. Alivia Miller also contributed with 19 assists. Miller also led the Golden Eagles in digs with 13.

No. 6 Sioux Falls Roosevelt defeated No. 7 Brandon Valley 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-19)

Kaylee Evenson was the top offensive player for Roosevelt with 11 kills. Kate Wiebesiek had 28 assists as well, while Katie Bleeker (21), Izzy Brinkman (16), Wiebesiek (12), and Evenson (12) combined for 61 digs on defense. On the Brandon Valley end, Abby Gruber and Jayaunna Stroh each had eight kills, Logan McGuire had 12 assists, and Mya VanWesten contributed with 17 digs.

Semifinals

No. 1 Harrisburg defeated No. 4 O’Gorman 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21)

Gabi Zachariasen was the top attack weapon for Harrisburg in the semifinals with 21 kills She also had two serve aces in the match. Her teammate Josalyn Samuels totaled 40 assists. Maggie Meister led the Tigers defensively with 17 digs. For O’Gorman, Lauren Venenga tallied 14 kills, while Kyra Hermanson contributed with 32 assists. Tyla Mauney led the Knights in digs with ten.

No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington defeated No. 2 Sioux Falls Jefferson 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16)

Kaelyn Snoozy had 17 kills for Washington, while Emily Akkerman contributed to the attack with 29 assists. Defensively for the Warriors, Taryn Kirsch tallied up 21 digs. Emory Bosnahan was top attacker in the box score for Jefferson with seven kills. She also led the team in digs with 11. Averi Schmitt contributed 13 assists also for the Cavaliers.

Class A

Consolation Semifinals

No. 1 Miller defeated No. 5 Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 25-18)

Aleah Schlechter led the offense attack for the Rustlers with 14 kills. Kate Lichty also added 14 kills in the match. Olivia Resel set up 45 assists for Miller as well, and Jolie Palmer led on the defense with 29 digs. On the Mt. Vernon/Plankinton side, Reagan Rus was the kills leader with 18. Alyssa Johnson had 27 assists and Alexis Hauge led the Titans with 22 digs.

No. 7 Sioux Valley defeated No. 6 Winner 3-2 (22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 13-25, 16-14)

This five-set doozy saw big performances from Kaedyn Sapp and Adison Renkly on the attack as the duo combined for 30 kills. Sunny Hesby and Machaela Gerasch also each had over 20 assists in the match too. The Cossacks digs leader was also Hesby. She had 30 in the contest. For Winner, Keelie Kuil led the team in kills with 17, while Gracie Root contributed 44 assists. Cora Moss had the most digs for the Warriors with 31.

Semifinals

No. 4 Dakota Valley defeated No. 8 Sioux Falls Christian 3-2 (19-25, 28-26, 25-20, 15-25, 16-14)

Claire Munch was the offensive star for Dakota Valley in the semifinal match, racking up 31 kills in the winning effort. Madelyn Munch, her sister, led the team in assists with 40. Defensively, two players jumped off the stat sheet for the Panthers. Reagan Granstrom compiled 28 digs, while Claire Munch had 25 digs. Brietta Tims led Sioux Falls Christian with 25 kills in the match. Addisen Barber also had 54 assists, while Chloe Bosma put up 45 digs in the box score for the Chargers.

No. 3 Dell Rapids defeated No. 2 Hamlin 3-0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-16)

Madelynn Henry led the attack points for Dell Rapids in the semifinals with ten kills. Sophi Randall added 20 assists as well, and Alaina Wolff led in the digs category with nine. For Hamlin, Addie Steffensen led the team with six kills. Issie Steffensen tallied ten assists in the match, and Jayci Trowbridge had eight digs on defense for the Chargers.

Class B

Consolation Semifinals

No. 8 Castlewood defeated No. 4 Kadoka Area 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19)

Castlewood’s lead attacker in the match was Emerson Carter with 22 kills. Her teammate Cassidy Kirwan had 23 assists. Nora Solberg led the Warriors on the defensive side with 16 digs. Bella Williams finished with 13 kills for Kadoka Area. Kassidee Williams, Bella’s sister, set up 19 assists for the Kougars. Both Madisyn Nemecek and Shaylee Porch had nine digs in the match as well for Kadoka Area.

No. 7 Colman-Egan defeated No. 6 Gayville-Volin 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-10)

Brynlee Landis was the top offensive player in the box score with 13 kills for Colman-Egan. Elaina Rhode also had 10 kills for the squad. Finley Luze and Landis also combined for 29 assists. Rhode contributed 19 digs on the defensive side for the Hawks. Maia Achen and Kayden Bye each had six kills for Gayville-Volin. Britton Scheetz contributed 20 assists and Taylor Hoxeng dug out 15 balls on the defensive side for the Raiders.

Semifinals

No. 1 Chester defeated No. 5 Burke 3-1 (19-25, 25-17, 28-26, 25-18)

Chester’s Jacy Wolf accumulated 20 kills in the match, while Lily Van Hal followed close behind her with 19. Van Hal also led the Flyers with 29 assists, and Gracie Huntimer led defensively with 29 digs. For Burke, Kailee Frank led the team with 16 kills. Emmy Spencer tallied 19 assists, and she also led the Cougars in digs too with 23.

No. 2 Warner defeated No. 3 Hitchcock-Tulare 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-20)

MaKenna Leidholt led the Monarchs with 14 kills. Libby Scepaniak and Reagan Wood combined for 38 of Warner’s 39 assists. Jordyn Jensen led the squad with 18 digs. For Hitchcock-Tulare, Katelyn Schroeder led the team with 15 kills, Lila Jo Johnson had 17 assists, and Cambree Hoekman contributed defensively with 17 digs.
