On Saturday at the Belmont Stakes, American Pharoah will attempt to become the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 and just the 12th in the sport's history. As columnist Stu Whitney writes in today's Sioux Falls Argus Leader, capturing the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in a single year became a monumental accomplishment after jockey Earl Sande rode Gallant Fox to victory in the three races in 1930.
Sande was born in Groton, South Dakota in 1898. He's a Hall of Fame jockey with 968 career victories from 1918-32. Sande's fame was such that Damon Runyon wrote a poem about him, There Never Was a Guy So Handy as Sande. Stu Whitney joined Dakota Midday and discussed the South Dakota legend.
