The Rapid City Police Department is giving the public an inside look at what a patrol shift is really like. Law enforcement officials created what they are calling a virtual ride-a-long. This is where an official with the police department rides along with an officer during a shift and posts live updates via Twitter.
Tarah Heupel is the Information Officer for the Rapid City Police Department. She says the first ride-a-long was a success.
“We started just by something simple – transporting a subject to jail - and from there we went as far searching for a missing person and trying to locate them at a campsite out in field,” says Heupel.
Heupel says the police department has received many positive compliments on the tweet-a-long. Anyone wanting these real-time updates can follow along on Twitter. Heupel adds that plans are in the works for a night time tweet-a-long with the street crimes unit.
