Western South Dakota was hit with a strong October storm Tuesday with parts of the Black Hills seeing up to 22 inches of snow.
A winter storm warning is still in effect for all of Harding, Butte and Lawrence counties as well as Sturgis and Hill City.
Meade County east to Lyman and Hughes counties and west to Fall River are all under a high wind warning. Some towns heading east on I-90, like Wasta and New Underwood, have seen windspeeds up to 75 miles per hour today.
I-90 from Rapid City to the Wyoming border reopened at 2 p.m. MT today.
David Hintz is a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Rapid City.
“There's still a lot of no travel advised through the Hills and again through Western South Dakota," he said. "And even though conditions are improving, people should still stay off the roads to let the crews and the counties have a chance to get out there and open things up, so people just aren't getting in the way.”
Hintz said wind speeds should gradually die down by Thursday. He said this weekend should be warmer with temperatures in the 50s to lower 60s for most of West River.
