A preliminary storm summary from the National Weather Service in Aberdeen reports five tornadoes touched down in the state on Thursday. The tornadoes accompanied the derecho that ripped through eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota. The worst damage occurred in Hamlin and Deuel counties in South Dakota.
The Castlewood tornado caused significant damage to a school and several other structures. Estimated winds reached 120 mph, making it an EF2 tornado.
Another tornado just south of Gary in Deuel County destroyed a farmhouse and blew a garage off the foundation. Those winds are estimated at 135 mph, for another EF2 twister.
Three weaker tornadoes caused caused damage in Codington, Deuel and Day counties in South Dakota. Two tornadoes touched down in Traverse County, Minnesota.
