Southeast South Dakota facing winter weather system Thursday

Another winter weather system is set to impact southeast South Dakota.

A winter weather advisory takes effect at noon Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. The system stretches from south central South Dakota to the Brookings area, though areas further south are expected to get more snow.

“We are looking at a mix of snow and freezing drizzle, maybe a little bit of freezing rain into southern South Dakota here later this afternoon," said National Weather Service meteorologist Philip Schumacher. "And then that’s going to change to all snow, especially north of Highway 18 along I-90 and such. We’re expecting some pretty decent snowfall here as we get into the evening hours and that all is expected to end after Midnight.”

Schumacher said the southern part of the state could see anywhere between 2 to 4 inches of snow accumulation. The northern parts of the state won’t see too much in the way of winter weather, with less than an inch expected north of Watertown. The southern Black Hills could also see a small amount of snow.

The system is set to make for messy travel conditions for thousands.

“For the evening commute, that mix of freezing drizzle and snow across the area could cause some travel problems, so be prepared to take some extra time tonight when traveling home from work or schoos," Schumacher said.

Schumacher said that although the snow fall will end late Thursday, it could also affect Friday morning’s commute.
