A large, prolonged winter storm system is expected to bring heavy snow and strong winds across the Midwest, including all of South Dakota.
Snow will move into some areas Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. Heavier, widespread snow will arrive Wednesday.
"This second round of snow, winds and extreme snow, winds and extreme cold will result in dangerous/near-impossible travel conditions for parts of South Dakota and Minnesota," a tweet from the Aberdeen National Weather Service said. "Improvement is not anticipated until during the day Thursday."
The entire state will be under a winter storm warning as of noon Tuesday. The threat is upgraded to a blizzard warning for most of the state east of the James River.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety called this a "we are not kidding" storm. Officials are advising against travel.
Total snow accumulation from Tuesday through Thursday will vary by region. However, the latest NWS forecast shows at least six inches expected across the state, with some areas set to get a foot or more.
